Trimo Urban Crash 2011 - Student Architectural Award Generates a Record Number of Submissions

Slovenia / Trebnje, 2 February 2011 – With the closing date now passed, Trimo Urban Crash - the 3rd International Bi-Annual Competition for Students of Architecture and Design has received a record number of entries with some 363 projects having been submitted from 56 countries around the world.
The largest number of entries were received from Serbia (79), Poland (62), and Slovenia (43), although submissions were also received from the USA, Great Britain, Spain, Slovakia, Russia, Italy, Hong Kong, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries.

An international jury of ten experts will evaluate the submitted projects during March after which the public will get the opportunity to vote on their favourite project via the web site, www.trimo-urbancrash.com and the entry with the greatest number of votes by both, the jury and the public, will be declared the winner.

Trimo will build the winning project in Ljubljana’s residential area, Nove Fužine, in June of this year. The winner will also be awarded the chance to participate in a summer school at the acclaimed Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture. Students who receive the highest evaluations will get the chance to participate in an architectural workshop held in Ljubljana.

This year’s creative mission presented students of architecture and design the challenge to design a unique urban installation, using Trimo materials, for the residential area of Nove Fužine, in Ljubljana. The main purpose of the installation is to brighten up the neighbourhood and offer a distinct answer to the architectural and social problems that are typical of European suburbs. The chosen theme inspired students from all around the world as the competition attracted 147% more submissions than previous competition.

Miloš Ebner, Chief Innovation Officer in Trimo, commented: “We are pleased to see that so many individuals were motivated by this year’s competition. This confirms that we have set this competition at the correct level and that it contains added-value for students of architecture and design from all over the world. 'Trimo Urban Crash' is one of the few competitions that provide students with the opportunity to participate in all levels of creation of an architectural building, starting from idea creation to full implementation and construction of this idea.”

Miloš Florjančič, organiser of the competition and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, Slovenia, added: “Members of the jury are looking forward to seeing modern, and architecturally and technically perfected, solutions from students, from all over the world. In the evaluation process we will mainly be looking for innovative, simple, and interesting solutions, as well as paying attention to the power of the design and what a solution truly expresses and how it serves its purpose to liven up the common European residential areas.”
